Wella Wednesday: New Hair.

New hair time, well similar to before but just slight tweaks in that I wanted the orange brightening again as it had started to dull, and there's also a different pink in there too, but it's subtle... I want it brighter next time. :-) I also had just about an inch taken off all over and a few long layers kept in.

I must say, I am not getting bored at all with my main colour, or the orange but I did toy with the idea of having a bluey/turquoise as my contrast colour, or very bright pink (or both)... maybe I'll go for that in my next appointment, or the one after. I do love the bright shades, and am getting them done whilst I'm still just about young enough to pull it off, ha.

The technique the dye was applied in is called Flashlights, and is apparently where hair is going now that Ombré and Dip Dying are apparently 'fizzling out'. Basically, on my hair it's my normal hair colour, then pink, then orange then pink again.. so it's not just the one shade in each length of hair.

Back and front, styled.

The colour I have on my main bit of hair is Koleston with a shade mixed up for me, made up of: 55/65 with 0/65, 0/28 and 8/81 (roots and mid lengths) with makes a slightly lighter pinky, purple-y, red shade; and then also Magma for the pink and orange parts. Magma lifts and colours at the same time, so effectively cuts out having to pre-lighten/bleach and is permanent.

To style, I had it blown with volume, and then curled using the new Wella straighteners (not yet out), before having the curls combed and shaken through to loosen, and set with hairspray. I love it.

Guy Kremer Professional Salon Style Shampoo & Conditioner!

I was recently sent a selection of products from the new Guy Kremer Salon Style Range and the first 2 products I'm going to tell you about are the 'Repair & Replenish Cleanser (Shampoo) for Colour Treated Hair' and 'Add The Bounce Rebalancer (Conditioner) for Fine/Fragile Hair'!

Now I was actually also sent the matching shampoo and conditioner for each of the products above, but since I have both colour treated AND fine hair, I thought it might be a good idea to mix the products up so that I (hopefully) addressed each characteristic of my hair by using them in this way... and I think it has actually worked!

The shampoo is a clear shampoo that lathers VERY well and feels ultra silky on the hair, with only a fairly small amount of product needed in each wash! The scent is quite herby, but not excessively so and I think would be suitable for ladies and men alike. It left my hair feeling clean and fresh but not stripped of colour or moisture - so basically it does what it says on the tin!

The conditioner is creamy and white and again, only a small amount is needed. I applied mine to the ends, then working through to the mid-lengths of my hair before using the tiny amount left on my hands a little closer to my roots. The conditioner moisturised my hair perfectly without weighing it down and left it feeling silky soft and VERY smooth.

I could not stop touching my hair after washing it, I can't remember the last time it has felt so soft and smooth (other than when I've been to the hairdressers)... and styling it was a dream, so easy!!

I hadn't actually noticed how much the products cost until I had already used them (something I try to do with new products that I try that I don't already know the brand's price point so that my opinion is based only on the product itself), and after using these, I was expecting them each to be to be around the £15-20 mark, but to my complete surprise, they only cost £6.97 each which is VERY reasonable indeed for such fantastic products.

Hair Colouring - Salon or DIY? Plus My New Colour!

Colouring your hair is, to many, a regular occurrence... be it by doing it yourself, or by having it done at a salon. I had my hair coloured yesterday at the the Wella Studio in Manchester, where I’ve actually been going to since I was about 16 or 17!

Whilst having my hair coloured, I had a conversation with the colour technician about home colouring and its advantages/disadvantages, and apart from the cost difference and possibly the time taken to do it (if you use a 10 minute developing colour), I actually couldn’t think of any other advantages... and it got me wondering why some people choose to home colour, and some don’t.

I have done both home and salon colour on a regular basis, but I much, MUCH prefer a salon service and this is my main way of having my hair coloured. I just find it to be so much easier, I am completely cack-handed when it comes to well, anything really, and the risk of me ruining something in the house, or an item of clothing is always very high, since it’s such a messy job. I also hate the rinsing part of the task, it’s so tedious and that just means that I usually give up just before I’m actually supposed to!

Then there was always the risk that I hadn’t applied the colour evenly, or that the colour will ‘take’ differently in different areas of my hair, or that it could react with previous colours (even if from the same brand etc)... there’s just too many factors that could go wrong for my liking!

I know that money is a huge factor with anything these days, unless you are super rich and hair colouring can be very costly in salons, but there are ways to save on this if you know where to look.

My new colour - slightly less pink than before!

Firstly, there are specialist training salons such as the Wella Studio where I go, I pay just £17.50 to have my hair coloured there (it was £15 for many years and has only just increased, but is still very affordable)!

The reason for the cheap price is because they really only charge to cover the cost of products used as they get their real money from running advanced training courses for already qualified hairdressers (usually very experienced ones) which might be showing new cutting/colouring techniques, new products or further, more specialised qualifications such as the MCA/MCS (Master Colour Award/Specialist) diplomas, which are basically like degrees in hair colouring.

It can take a little longer to have your hair coloured here sometimes, if being done by a student, but a lot of the time I find myself being invited to have my hair coloured by a technician or a special guest (somebody who has notable experience/awards etc and usually very well known in the hairdressing industry) and these are usually as a demo to students, sometimes, these has even included having my make-up done as a bonus too!

It’s also not a traditional booking system, they book you in when they have courses booked in (although it’s not impossible to get a regular-ish appointment, I should add)... or you may get a call asking if you can make it in at short notice if they’re caught short etc.

I love going here, I have never had a bad hair colour done and in all the years I’ve been going, I’ve only ever been unhappy with a cut I’ve had twice, just because the person doing it hadn’t taken onboard what I’d asked for as much as I hoped (which can happen anywhere)! I believe there’s another Wella Studio in London, but I think L’Oreal and other brands *may* do similar – it’s just a case of enquiring to see who does, or doesn’t in an area close to you!

 

If you’re not close to one of these training institutes then there’s always the option of going to your local college (obviously only ones that do hair/beauty courses) as they are usually crying out for real customers for the students to work on. Don’t be too worried about going to one of these, as they’re all supervised by fully qualified tutors, and if you’re ever not happy about the colour, they’ll always be able to rectify it for you as much as any salon would. If you’re still not 100% sure, you can ask for advanced students, or Level 3 as these are basically final year students that have the most knowledge about colouring and techniques.

I’ve also had my hair done in this manner, when I’ve not been able to get into Manchester for whatever reason and have never come away unhappy! Some colleges also do facials, massaging, manicures etc which is also worth looking into – I’ve had many (fabulous) dermalogica facials at my local college! It is cheap and cheerful, you’re generally not surrounded by amazing spa features but your skin/hair will still get the treatment that it is supposed to, and to me that is what matters most.

My top tips for if you are going to do your own colour would be to:

1. Make sure the colour you buy is suitable for your hair – both in terms of colour and products already on it, but also that your target colour will be what you’re looking for. Don’t just expect that it will look the same colour as it will on the front of the packet. Hairdressers sometimes have to use 2 or 3 different variations of the same shade to get an even colour from root to tip due to varying hair shades from previous colours, and different hair porosity from root to tip etc! Also remember that not all hair colours are created equally – some will be good, some not so much – research online if you don’t already have a brand that you trust!
2. Try not to buy permanent colour unless you never plan on having a different colour, as constantly applying permanent colour of a certain colour (ie dark brown) will build up on your hair, and could stop your hair accepting a new colour (like mine did last Christmas after going through a phase of home colouring in dark brown, and then wanting to change to red tones)... and even more so if you’re wanting to go lighter (I would only recommend using a salon service for this kind of colour correction)!
3. Dedicate 1 towel and one top/outfit for the job (preferably old ones), and only use those when colouring your hair so that you don’t ruin too many other things in the process.
4. Finally, apply the colour in the bathroom (even in the bath) as there are more surfaces there that won’t be ruined straight away if there are any mishaps... but do wipe up any solution that splatters, spills or drips on both household items/furniture and also on your skin immediately, as you really don’t want to be ruining things or rocking your hair colour all the way down your face/neck, or both!

Holiday Hair Care!

Protecting your skin in the sun is something most of us do automatically by now, but what about your hair? How many of you protect your hair whilst on holiday? Think about it; the blazing hot sun with its harmful UV rays, and swims in the sea/pool (meaning plenty of salt water and/or chlorine penetrating into your hair, causing further damage and making the UV damage even worse) both working with each other to damage those precious strands. Even in this country, hair can be prone to UV damage – and let’s face it, we don’t get much sun to start with, so it just goes to show how easily the damage can occur.

Now, I don’t know about you but my hair is pretty important to me. It’s a big part of how I express myself and how I present myself to the world and I like to do my best to keep it looking as good as possible - even it might not always look that way but that’s a whole other story.

First and foremost, protecting your hair (at the very least whilst on holiday) can protect your hair colour. I currently have red tones in my hair (quite bright, see photo above for the rough colour) which are notoriously difficult to maintain and keep it looking vibrant – and you may remember my dilemma post before my holiday, worrying about keeping this colour tip top whilst away?! Protecting your hair also keeps it hydrated, in better condition and easier to manage whilst you’re away and also when you get back. You can protect your hair in a couple of ways:

• Wear a hat and try to stay in the shade; wearing a hat not only protects your hair, it also protects your scalp which can be prone to burning which could lead to skin cancer (as you will already know)... and staying in the shade should keep your hair (and skin) a little bit more protected from the harmful rays.

• Use a sun protection product: These can come in cream, spray or even serum formulas that you basically apply to your hair, much like any of your usual styling products and are left in throughout the day. The best way to use these products is before and after you’ve been swimming, and then with regular applications throughout the day (even if not swimming) – just like you might use sun cream, really.

Whilst on holiday, I used Korres Red Vine Sun Protection Spray (around £10) throughout the whole stay – sorry I don’t have a real photograph of it, I did take one but some of my photographs were corrupt when I got home, including this one and as I used it all up, I didn't bring back the empty bottle. It smells lovely, was easy to use (spray formula) and I think really did help to protect my locks!

The photograph below shows my hair after my holiday and as you can see, it’s actually not in bad condition – considering I was in Egypt where it is incredibly hot, and spent most of the day, every day in the pool (and going down the water slides *ahem*). What do you think? It has faded, there’s no doubt about that but I really do think that the fading would have been much, much worse had I not been using a hair protection spray. I also came back with hair that didn’t resemble straw which is always a bonus.

Another hair protection range that is worth consideration comes from Schwarzkopf Professional with products including:

BC Bonacure Sun Protect Hair & Body Shampoo (approx £9.30 for 250ml) which says it will cleanse hair to limit sun, salt and pollution damage (so could be great if you live in a city too) and sooth sun stressed hair and scalps. You can use this before and after sun exposure, depending on how often you like to wash your hair on holiday. Personally my hair gets too dry if I wash it too much so I wash after I’ve come in from the pool, just before I go out for the evening but everybody has their own routine.

BC Bonacure Sun Protect Spray Conditioner (£10.45 for 200ml) – This is a 2 phase protection spray that will protect hair against UV rays whilst minimising damage from other environmental factors. I personally would use this throughout the day as and when necessary, but also as a leave in conditioner after washing in the evening! This smells lovely and is not at all oily either on the skin or in the hair.

'Foam' spray is more creamy than foamy!

BC Bonacure Sun Protect After-Sun Treatment (£11.80 for 200ml) – This is a more intensive treatment that you can use to nourish, repair and smooth your hair after sun exposure. It’s a rinse out product that comes as a 'foam' spray although I don't find it to be very foamy. I haven’t been using this all the time, just once a week as a treat for my hair and is of a lovely, creamy consistency (it also smells divine, much like the rest of the range)!

I only received these AFTER I came back from my jollies so I haven’t had the chance to put them through rigorous testing, since the weather has been so... well crap here too. What I will say though is that when I have used the range, my hair felt super clean, soft and healthy and for that reason I have no hesitation in recommending the range to you, even if you’re not going on holiday, as hair needs care wherever you are!

Holiday Hair Colour Dilemma!

 

As you may know, I currently have my hair coloured in red/purple tones... I’m loving these kinds of colours in my hair, but am slightly panicking about how it will fare when I go to Egypt in about 5 weeks both in terms of fading in the sun and also leaking when in the pool or the sea.

I currently have Wella Koleston Perfect and Colour Touch products in my hair (both semi permanent, salon colours) which last great usually, but do have leakage in water when washing etc so I’m a little bit worried about this happening whilst I’m swimming. I’ve had red in my hair before, but never at a time when I’ve been going on holiday so this has got me stumped!

Anyway, I’m left with a few choices... 1. Take whatever happens on the chin and just have fun, 2. Have permanent colours put in my hair next time, so there may be less of a chance of the product leaking off my hair or 3. Go for a different colour that’s not as heavy in terms of upkeep whilst away!

I’m keeping my eye on Groupon and Wahanda for any good hairdressing deals but honestly, I need to decide what to do when the time comes more than anything; so I am calling on you, my fabulous readers to see what you would do?

Goodness 'Grey'cious Me!

This year I have noticed quite a few reports on and pictures of celebrities with grey hair; not only celebrities that are showing off their naturally grey hair and being proud of it (e.g. Kristen McMenamy), but also that celebrities who don’t yet have grey hair that have been dying it silver/grey as a fashion statement (e.g. Kelly Osbourne).

I’m quite intrigued by this as being grey has always seemed to be a no-no when it came to being in the spotlight. If only the grey hair revolution had happened whilst I was at school, it could have saved me a lot of embarrassment all those years ago; if you want to know why then just carry on reading...

I had an unfortunate incident after a visit to the hairdresser once, when I was in my early teens. I was actually going there to get some blonde highlights (using a cap eeek) in my hair as it was the thing to do at the time (around the same time as the ‘Rachel’ haircut actually) and naturally I wanted to fit in with my school friends; so off I went with my mum to have it done.

Once it was done and I had seen my hair in their mirror things were all seemingly fine, that was until I got home and I had chance to have a look at my hair in my own mirror! I got such a shock, they had left the bleach on for so long that my ‘blonde’ highlights were actually white, and mixed in with my brown hair it gave it an overall grey appearance. I hadn’t noticed until later because under the hairdressers lights it had looked more blonde than white, so I had left there happy. 

Predictably when I went to school the next day people were asking me why I had dyed my hair grey like a grandma, I had hoped they wouldn’t notice but in all fairness in the broad light of day it was a lot more noticeable. Now because kids are kids, for the following few weeks I was renamed Granny, Grandma, and Nana etc etc which is funny now, but at the time was mortifying (especially after the ‘Cuthbert’ incident I suffered when I was about 9 – that’s a story for another post though). Luckily it wasn’t permanent but the stress of it going wrong could have quite easily made it that way!

So what do you guys make of these ‘grey’ celebrities? Would you ever be brave enough to not cover up any naturally grey hair you have, or if you’re not already grey would you ever be so bold as to dye it grey or silver?

Batty For Batiste!

I’ve been familiar with the Batiste brand for a while not, but had never really been able to get to grips with it because I have dark hair most of the time (I have the occasional flirt with blonde and red, but usually end up brunette again in the end) and the product comes out white. It’s a bit like you’d expect talc to be if you put it onto dark hair and I usually just ended up looking like I’d been baking messily or had visited an old dusty building/building site. I came to the conclusion that the normal Batiste range was probably better for people with lighter hair or more patience than me.

When I heard about their new range for dark hair I became interested again in the brand, so was pleased when I was sent some that I could test for myself; there are 2 varieties for dark hair in brunette or black and I got to try out both. Now as I said I do have brown hair but it is quite dark so I found that both of them worked equally as well for my hair without making it too dark or light where I had applied it. Application was easy, although I was aware of dark splatters in a few areas (both around and on me) but these were easily cleaned off and left no marks.

I am completely sold on this stuff, it’s fantastic – perfect for those days where you just don’t have time to wash, dry and style your hair before going out and doesn’t turn your hair white in the process. 

In my brilliant Batiste package I was also sent 2 of the shimmer/glitter varieties (in both gold and silver) and whilst I quite liked the shimmery glittery sparkles in my hair as they were noticeable but not excessive, I found that the actual Batiste product was more like the original white powder style that doesn’t agree with me quite as much. If you have lighter hair however, I imagine this product would be fantastic for you.

Denman - Brilliant British Brushes!

I remember when I first heard about Denman brushes; it must have been about 18 or so years ago when I was just starting high school. An older friend at the time was training to become a hairdresser and introduced me to the brand and I convinced my mum to buy one that we shared.

It seems that these days we’re getting more used to things not being built to last like they used to, so I was curious to see if their brushes were still of the same quality that they were all those years ago.

The Denman brand is synonymous with being the hairdressers’ choice of brush and I feel this is because of the quality of the products on offer; the fact that the brushes have stood the test of time, that they are still classed as some of the best brushes available today speaks volumes.

They have many varieties of their brushes available these days too, a brush for any occasion you might say; but the thing that stays constant, is the confidence in the Denman brand.

Their first brush (the D3) is still available, but has now also been released in a few new pimped up styles. This particular makeover of the brush has a change of colour which is generally expected when being made over I guess, but also includes the addition of scent to the brush; yes that’s right, scent.

I have the strawberry scented brush and it’s quite cute. The smell isn’t overpowering, and actually reminds me of the smell of the strawberry shortcake doll I had as a little girl, I don’t know if many (or in fact any) of you know what I mean by this, but it does.

It’s quite a novel idea really, although it doesn’t appear to have a specific purpose that I’ve noticed as the scent doesn’t transfer to your hair (well not in my experience anyway), but you can smell it when you use the brush with a hairdryer which is quite nice, but still ultimately pointless.

None the less I do like it, it does make the range stand out above other brushes available and I think would be a great little stocking filler gift at Christmas. As a standalone brush it holds up very well, it's anti static because of the rubber cushioning and it also holds the hair firmly in place whilst styling which makes it easier to control where the hair goes!

There are 5 different ‘flavours’ available in the aptly named ‘Tutti Frutti’ range:

• Strawberry - red rubber pad and fruit prints

• Green apple – green pad and fruit prints

• Lemon sherbet – yellow pad and fruit prints

• Wild dewberry – Purple (as above) – intriguing as dewberry was my favourite Body Shop scent when I was much younger

• Coconut – there are 2 different styles for this scent, one with a plastic handle as matching with the rest of the range and one that has a beech wood handle (and is a couple of pounds more expensive as a result).

The D14 appears to be a handbag sized version of the D3, but this one has added bling in the form of diamantes embedded into the handle and back of the brush that the magpie in me instantly loved. I'm glad they sunk the diamantes into the brush as this way they have the benefit of looking nice, but don’t dig into your hand when in use, which is a winner all round!

There are 3 colours available (black, red and gold) and these are also available in the D3 brush, with an extra addition of a turquoise one in the D3 diamante range.

The size is a good size for handbags that aren’t *too* small but I think for smaller bags and clutches, this brush would be too big to go in if you still needed get other essentials in there too.

I don’t think the brush suffers too much with being a smaller size as I've found it works just as well as the larger one, but I wouldn’t use it to fully style my hair as although I have no doubt that it would do the job, I just think on my longer hair that it would take too much longer to do so. If you have shorter hair, this would be brilliant for using on that in my opinion.

Moving on to the smallest of Denman brushes (that I'm aware of) we have the D7. This is a very small brush and mirror that fold in together, and to be honest I didn’t think it would be any use as it is so small. Couple that with the fact that you have to pop it out to use the brush in it I really didn’t think it would be strong or big enough to go through my hair and tidy it up.

So imagine my surprise when I found that it does actually do a very good job of neatening hair whilst on the move and as with the brush above, whilst I wouldn’t use it for styling it I would definitely use it if I was out and only had a small bag or clutch to carry it in, as this would be perfect for that.

Obviously you can’t look in the mirror whilst using the brush bit so you’d need to brush and check, or get in front of a larger mirror but it’s a bonus that it does double as a compact that you can use to touch up your makeup too.

Looks wise, on the mirror side it looks like a regular compact mirror, but flip it over and it looks like what I can only describe as a spotted ladies diaphragm (sorry). However once the sides are together it’s perfectly fine, it just looks like a normal compact mirror.

This brush is £2.50 each and worth every penny.

Tangle Teezer - Teeze Me Baby!

Advantages: Works on wet hair, Detangles, Decent price, Suitable for all hair, Good for children, Easy wash

Disadvantages: Maybe a handle would be good for those with restricted movement.

The Tangle Teezer is the brainchild of ex hair colourist, Shaun Pulfrey that was originally shown on the TV show, Dragons Den where it was deemed ‘not a business’ by the dragons. Thankfully this did not put Shaun off and he re-mortgaged his home to fund the launch of the product which has been a huge success ever since; I bet those dragons are really kicking themselves now!

The brush is essentially just a piece of well moulded plastic, but the vital difference in this brush from any other brush is that the bristles are specially positioned and designed to flex just the right amount to remove tangles and minimise tugging that can cause damage to the hair. These bristles are also said to help smooth the cuticle which gives a more sleek finish to the hair because smooth cuticles sit flat and create more shine.

I bought this brush because I started swimming, and hated leaving the pool with wet hair that couldn’t be brushed until it was dry. This brush has been perfect for this use; I have been able to leave the pool with relatively ok looking hair since its arrival, rather than messy wet rats tails that I had rather shamefully been sporting previously.

The Tangle Teezer doesn’t have a handle, and sits quite comfortably in your hand due to its shape and size. To actually use the brush, is pretty much the same as any other brush in that you just run it through your hair, and whilst most other brushes would possibly require you to not brush too hard, Tangle Teezer is said to work best with more pressure being applied. You can even use the bristles to give your scalp a little massage and get the blood flowing to the follicles – not to mention it just feels bloomin’ lovely.

This brush really does work well when getting any tangles or knots out, but also works just as well as an everyday brush on wet or dry hair. You can’t use anything heated with this brush, I expect this is because it could melt due to its chemical makeup, although I wouldn’t use this for styling anyway. I just love knowing I can run a brush through my hair right after washing or swimming though, so much better than having to use a comb in my opinion.

When these brushes were first released there was a choice of pink or black colour rise, now there are 5 of them in the original design according to the website comprising of oyster green, pearl blue, purple glitter and the original pink and black ones. There are also new additions in the forms of the Tangle Teezer Compact (3 colours black, pink/black and gold/black) that have an RRP of £11.99 each, and also the flowerpot that seems to be aimed for children’s use (2 colours, pink and pale blue) which has an RRP of £12.99 each. They are available in a variety of places from Boots to Amazon and many many other places, usually priced around £9.99. I paid £9.75 from Amazon, but rather annoyingly I have recently seen them for £7 at hairdressers shop near me.
